Gel Retarder | Medium - 237ml Bottles
Gel Retarder | Medium - 237ml Bottles
Jo Sonja's Gel Retarder delays the drying time of Jo Sonja Matte Flow Acrylic without altering the viscosity of the paint. This allows for extended working or ‘open’ time, ideal for blending, antiquing, and applying thicker layers of colour. It is advisable to practice techniques with this medium before beginning any major projects.
Directions:
- As a Painting Medium: Moisten the brush with Gel Retarder and blend thoroughly with the paint. If the paint drags, refresh by adding more Gel Retarder to the brush and repeat blending on the palette.
- For Extended Working Time: Apply a thin coat directly to the surface to prolong the ‘open’ time.
- Mixing with Retarder: To adjust the ‘open time’ to your requirements, start with a ratio of 1 part Gel Retarder to 1 part Retarder Medium.
- For Palette Mixing: Mix directly into palette colours starting with a ratio of 1 part Gel Retarder to 3 parts paint.
- For Antiquing: Thin the colour with Gel Retarder, beginning with a ratio of 2 parts colour to 1 part Gel Retarder. Apply over the painted surface and wipe to achieve the desired effect, using Gel Retarder on a cloth to remove excess.
Additional Notes:
- Drying Time: Gel Retarder significantly extends drying time. Surfaces may feel dry but still retain moisture. A hairdryer can be used to accelerate surface drying. Extended drying and curing times should be allowed, varying with humidity and climate.
- Before Varnishing: Apply a coat of Flow Medium, Magic Mix, or Clear Glaze Medium prior to varnishing. If these products seize or curdle, it indicates the presence of uncured Gel Retarder. Stop application immediately and allow to dry completely before continuing.
- Compatibility: Do not apply Gel Retarder over Clear Glaze Medium or Magic Mix as it can dissolve these mediums in patches. Clear Glaze Medium may be applied over dried and cured Gel Retarder.
Coverage and Safety:
- Coverage: Approximately 1 ml covers 94 sq cm, 1 oz covers about 3 sq ft.
- Safety and Cleanup: Water-based and non-toxic, conforms to ASTM D 4236. Clean up with mild soap and cool water. Safe to dry with a hairdryer.

The Decorative Painting System
With the range of paints, also comes a range of mediums to allow unlimited techniques. Acrylic mediums are invaluable if you wish to change the paint consistency or alter drying times. Chroma has discovered ways of allowing the same set of colours to be applied on a variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, glass and textiles. The same colours (with the use of the mediums) can be stencilled, stamped, crackled or used in a host of elaborate faux finishes. By experimenting with the mediums, there are endless possibilities that can be achieved. Technique information sheets, designed to inspire your imagination, can be found on this website. Chroma continues its research and development of new products.
