Magic Mix is a light sealer akin to Clear Glaze Medium but includes an extender for longer ‘open’ or blending time. It dries to a matte finish, lightly sealing each layer to prevent lifting when additional layers are applied. Magic Mix is ideal for a variety of painting techniques and serves as an excellent substitute for water. Its applications include floated and side-loaded colour, colour glazing, and stipple blending. It is also superb for thinning paint for linework and detailed painting or achieving a smooth, even coat.

Directions:

  • Using Magic Mix: For side-loaded and floated colour, Magic Mix helps limit the paint's travel across the brush. For extended ‘open’ time, apply Retarder directly to the surface or pick it up with the brush. Load the brush with a small amount of Magic Mix, then side-load with colour and blend well on the palette. Apply colour as desired, softening or blending with the clean edge of the brush.
  • Layering Colour Glazes: Use Magic Mix and floated colour to layer colour glazes and create depth in your painting. Mix medium and colour until the colour is transparent, then apply lightly to adjust colour temperature, depth, or add tint. Soften with a clean brush edge.
  • For Strokework and Detail Painting: Blend Magic Mix with colour to achieve desired transparency or paint consistency. This increases the transparency and flow of the paint, allowing for quick corrections.

Additional Usage Tips:

  • Barrier Coat: Apply a barrier coat of Clear Glaze Medium prior to glazing to enhance the finish.
  • Drying and Sealing: Allow layers to dry before adding more; a hairdryer can be used to accelerate this process. Although Magic Mix acts as a light sealer, for additional protection, apply a coat of undiluted Clear Glaze Medium between layers and before varnishing.

Coverage and Safety:

  • Coverage: Approximately 1 ml covers 125 sq cm, 1 oz covers about 4 sq ft.
  • Cleanup and Safety: Water-based and non-toxic, conforming to ASTM D 4236. Cleans up with mild soap and cool water. Safe to dry with a hair dryer.

The Decorative Painting System

With the range of paints, also comes a range of mediums to allow unlimited techniques.  Acrylic mediums are invaluable if you wish to change the paint consistency or alter drying times.  Chroma has discovered ways of allowing the same set of colours to be applied on a variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, glass and textiles.  The same colours (with the use of the mediums) can be stencilled, stamped, crackled or used in a host of elaborate faux finishes.  By experimenting with the mediums, there are endless possibilities that can be achieved.  Technique information sheets, designed to inspire your imagination, can be found on this website.   Chroma continues its research and development of new products.
